Will making and Codicils

Writing a Will is a good way to make sure that the people, pets and organisations close to your heart are protected after your death. As with all financial matters, LAA recommends seeking advice and comparing products and services. Please also read the section on types of Legacy if you are writing a new Will and thinking of including a Legacy within it.

In 2020, LAA developed a partnership with Beyond, an online Will-writing service to offer a quick and easy online Will-writing service for animal-minded supporters living in England and Wales. The service usually costs £90, but for LAA supporters, it is free. We have included some Frequently Asked Questions about the online Will-writing service below.

Who are Beyond?

Beyond is a leading, online Will-writing platform where users can write their Will from the comfort of their own home. It is safe, easy to use and legally-binding when the Will is printed off, signed and witnessed. It cuts out a solicitor. Beyond has many other charity partners including Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Woodland Trust. They are highly recommended by users of Trust Pilot.

How can I access the service?

You can access the service here and from the blue button below. From this 'landing page,' you can start writing. The code to use the service for free is on the landing page. It's really very easy.

Are there any additional costs?

No, but you can pay a £10 per year 'retainer' fee if you wish to make changes going forward.

How long does it take?

This depends on factors such as your family and how many people or charities you would like to include. But a Will can be written in as little as 15 minutes.

I don't know how to make a Will, does Beyond help?

Yes. When you start writing, you will be guided through some easy questions and this forms the template for your Will.

Why has LAA gone down this route?

Previously, LAA used to recommend a solicitor to those thinking of leaving us a gift in their Will. The company we used are no longer providing the service and we decided to explore online Wills which can be cheaper and quicker to set up.

Where can I find out more?

The Beyond website here explains the benefits of making a Will and statistics about who uses their service. The costs on this site do not apply to LAA supporters.

Independent research is recommended. Information from the UK government about making a Will is available here.

Are there costs to LAA when I set up my free Will?

Yes. There is a cost to LAA every time a Will is written. Therefore, if you are thinking of using the free service, we ask you respectfully to consider leaving a gift to our animals if you can.

Already made a Will?

Many people make a Will and assume that’s all they need to do. But things change as time goes by and it is worth reviewing your will every few years to check it still reflects your current wishes. Even if you are happy with the main provisions of your Will, you can still make changes.

If you choose to use a solicitor, additional provisions by way of a codicil can be made. For example, if you decide to add a legacy to Leicester Animal Aid some time after your Will is written, a codicil is a way to do this. You will need to have two independent witnesses present and to sign when you do.

If you choose an online Will-writing service like Beyond, there will be an option of changing your Will whenever you wish by paying an optional annual subscription.

Suggested wording for a codicil

"I (name) of (address) declare this to be my first codicil to my last Will, dated (date). I give (details of the legacy) to Leicester Animal Aid, Registered Charity Number 242560, Elmwood Farm, Forest Road, Huncote, Leicester LE9 3LE, for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of a duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge. In all other respects I confirm my Will."
