Community Pet Support Scheme

Keeping people and pets together

We believe in the importance of family at Leicester Animal Aid and the Community Pet Support Scheme is an extension of our values of caring for animals and the wider community, along with understanding the love and friendship that animal companionship provides.

The Scheme provides those who are elderly, have disabilities and those who are housebound with free professional support to help them to care for their pets within their own home for as long as it is mutually beneficial.

The Scheme has three main benefits:

  • Animal Welfare - It keeps animals who have loving homes with their owners whilst providing them with additional support in the form of extra exercise, veterinary treatment, and grooming. This prevents animals from needing to come into a rescue environment whilst improving their physical and mental health.
  • Animal companionship - We do not underestimate the companionship, love, and purpose that living with an animal can provide, especially for those who are socially isolated, housebound and who may not have regular interaction with people. The Scheme helps best friends stay together.
  • Human Friendship - Clients can make new friends through a shared passion for animals. In addition to the regular visits by our Animal Care Assistants, our clients can make new friends through the free social activities organised by Leicester Animal Aid throughout the year. They are invited to fun events where they can socialise with other clients and staff whilst taking part in games and activities. They are also supported with transport if required and accompanied by the friendly faces of the Animal Care Assistants.
