Star of the Month

Published 11th March 2024

Just lately we've introduced a Star of the Month accolade here at L.A.A. This is to celebrate and reward staff and volunteers who have gone the extra mile in their job, achieved something special or have given outstanding service.

This month, Clare Croughwell, CPSS Co-ordinator, and Heather Luckman, volunteer, have been chosen. We catch up with them for a few questions and answers about their role.

How long have you been in the role? - I've been at L.A.A. since Sept 2023

What did you do before this role? - I was an Employment Support Officer, providing advice, guidance support and personal development to clients on training, volunteering, and employment. This helped people access education and training opportunities.

What’s your favourite thing about the role at L.A.A.? I love the fact that I work with colleagues who are supportive and caring and actually enjoy what they do; going above and beyond. Being able to see positive results from the support we give is also great.

What’s one thing within your role that you hope never changes? Losing face to face contact with colleagues and clients in an era where technology does everything for you.

Do you have any pets? - Yes, I have two loving labs, Olly, who is my shadow, a rescue from L.A.A., and Charlie. They are the best of friends and a big part of my family. They are always happy to see me, no matter how long I’ve been out, even if it’s only been five minutes!

What made you first start volunteering? I have always loved dogs but the fact that I worked very long hours, sometimes away from home meant that it just wasn't right to have one. By volunteering at weekends, I would get my dog fix and get the fresh air whatever the weather, including Christmas Day!

What is your favourite thing about volunteering at LAA? - Over the years I have been trusted by the kennel staff with their dogs and consider myself really lucky to have this opportunity.

Do you have a favourite dog at the Centre? - Prior to volunteering, my favourite dogs were Spaniels and Labradors. I had never met a Staffie. Now Staffies are my favourite. It's always a joke when a Staffie comes in - one for Heather we say. I have two favourite dogs at the kennels; Harley because he gives such great cuddles and Kenny who loves his football. I love them both. You do get attached to the dogs but are so pleased when they get a home.

If you could be one breed of dog, what would it be and why? - If I was a dog I would be a Staffie, loyal, friendly, and talkative but don't upset me!
