A local running club has raised £575 for Leicester Animal Aid during a special weekend to mark a very important milestone in the club’s history.
The Desford Striders, who have chosen LAA as their charity of the year, were founded 30 years ago by Steve Morris who is now the president of the club. Despite being in lockdown the Striders were determined to celebrate their birthday in style and came up with the idea of a 30th anniversary relay run. The entry fees would then be donated to LAA.
The last weekend in February saw more than 110 runners, in their bright red specially designed anniversary t-shirts, out and about clocking up the miles. The runners, aged between 17 to 79, were put into 17 virtual teams with each competitor completing the run as their daily exercise in line with the current guidelines. The runs ranged in distance from 1.25 miles to 7.5 miles.
The club has come up with innovative ways to keep going during the past 12 months including virtual races to keep the members feeling connected. It’s very much hoped that they will soon be running back together again, and some members are planning to run marathons and half-marathons in support of us.
As well as supporting local charities, the club organises littler pick runs in the local area a 5-mile road race, a cross country race and co-organise the Bosworth Half Marathon.
A massive thank you to everyone involved in the Club for supporting us in their special anniversary year. You can find out more about the Club here.
