A Special Story - Pugs & Katie

Pugs is a 10 year old cross breed and Katie is a 10 year old Golden Retriever.

Pugs first arrived at LAA over 3 years ago with his friend ‘Sas’.  After many months at the kennels they were adopted and went to live with their new family.  The good news was tainted with sadness as ‘Sas’ had been diagnosed with cancer.  Sadly, he passed away a few months later. Pugs was in need of another canine friend and when he visited the kennels he fell in love with ‘Katie’  Katie had arrived a few months earlier as a stray and spent a brief period at a new home before being returned to the kennels. It seemed like the answer to their prayers as both dogs then headed off home together.  They were the best of friends and it did take Katie a little while to settle into her new home as she suffered with separation anxiety. Pugs was always on hand to comfort her and help her through this initial period of adjustment. In contrast to Pugs, Katie was very needy and clingy to her new family and after a period of 7 months, she was returned to the kennels. Pugs joined her a few days later to ensure they were kept together.  It took both of them a while to adjust again to kennel life and although many people over the next 10 months showed an interest in them, unfortunately it proved to be a new, permanent home for them.

It seemed that they were destined to spend a long time at LAA and we all hoped very much that someone would want to give them a chance in a ‘forever’ home.

Pugs struggled more than Katie at times and had a few visits to the vets with problems with his skin and ear.

At the beginning of the year a very nice couple visited the Centre looking to adopt a dog and were interested to learn more about Pugs and Katie. They met them both and noted their interest in wanting to offer them a loving home. Over the next few weeks, they visited Katie and Pugs and spent time with them, getting to know them better. We felt confident that they were just the people we had been hoping and waiting for and they were confident that both dogs were a perfect addition to their family.

We are delighted to say that Katie and Pugs have been happy in their new home for over 6 months now and have both visited the Centre recently to show us how content they really are.

Working in rescue can be the most rewarding job but it can also be upsetting to see so many animals arrive each year that struggle to find a new, loving home.  We are all so pleased for Katie and Pugs we wanted to share their story with you.
