A Special Story - Ricky

Ricky came to LAA as his owner was too poorly to look after him anymore.  He is a very handsome medium sized collie cross.  We didn’t think he would be with us very long because he was very affectionate and loving towards the kennel staff and volunteer dog walkers once he got to know them.  Unfortunately Ricky found it hard to make new friends with people straight away and he would be very protective of his kennel.  This made it very difficult when introducing him to prospective new families.  Months rolled into a year and then another and then another.  It was important that the kennels could provide him with a good quality of life in order that he remain so long at LAA.  Fortunately he loved his walks and time running around in the fields at the Centre and adapted well.  He had plenty of cuddles and tummy tickles to keep him content but we all hoped one day an understanding and patient family would see past his initial anxiety.  This day came when a family from Derbyshire saw him on the website and made enquiries.  It was explained that he did struggle when first meeting new people but if they were prepared to give him the time needed to make friends then we would be delighted for them to visit.  This did not put them off and each week they travelled a round trip of 1 ½ hours.  Ricky soon began to recognise them as friends and was happy to go out walking and greet them with a waggy tail.  After 5 weeks of visits Ricky was ready to go home and his family were delighted.  He has been in his new home for a week now and he has settled in really well.  He loves his new family and they love him.

All of the staff and volunteers at LAA are delighted he has finally been given a chance and is enjoying the life he really deserves.

We would like to send a special thank you to his new family for their patience and commitment to this special little boy.
